Study: Florida is home to worst drivers in U.S.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – A new study says Florida has the worst drivers in the entire country. The website Smart Asset ranked the Sunshine State first on the list of worst drivers.

Researchers reached this dubious distinction by compiling data, including the number of DUIs and car-related deaths. In addition, Florida has the second lowest number of insured drivers in the country.

“We don’t want to be number one; we don’t want to be number two, don’t even want to be in the top 10. We want everyone to come down here; we want them to be safe,” Trooper Kenn Watson said.

The Florida Highway Patrol says blame doesn’t rest solely with Floridians. Troopers pointed to tourists and retirees.

“When you put all of this together, obviously we’re gonna have some issues and we’re gonna have people vying for the same lot of land trying to get from point A to point B,” Watson said.

Motorists told News Channel 8 they weren’t surprised by the findings. “I have a child and I drive my child around, and when people are distracted, like I said it’s a recipe for disaster,” one woman said.

The study found four of the top 10 states with the worst drivers are in the Southeast. Mississippi is number two and Oklahoma is number three.
