LAND O LAKES, Fla. (WFLA) — A beloved final resting place for pets in Land O’ Lakes had fallen into disrepair in recent years, but amidst major budget cuts, Pasco County officials claimed they couldn’t help much and asked 8 On Your Side to reach out to the public for volunteers to help in a pet cemetery clean-up project.
Volunteers stepped up and partnered with the Pasco County Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Department to host a volunteer cleanup at Oakcrest Pet Cemetery in Land O’Lakes on Saturday morning.
They will rake leaves, remove debris, clean markers and statues, and help with other efforts to improve and beautify the cemetery.
The Cemetery is located at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, located at 3032 Collier Parkway. The sign at Oakcrest Cemetery reads, “Because We Care” and it was that sentiment that brought volunteers of all ages there on Saturday morning.
“Coming in and seeing it, I would have wanted to come in and do something to help,” said Michele Edmonson.
After seeing the original story about the disheveled pet cemetery on News Channel 8 back in June, Michele, along with her 12-year-old daughter Natalia, knew they had to help out.
“It made us feel like if our dog was buried here that we would be upset and we would be sad that maybe it wasn’t as nice as it could be,” said Natalia.
Along with Pasco County officials, Edmonson helped organize the cleanup day, where volunteers raked leaves, removed debris, cleaned markers and statues, and helped out with other efforts to improve and beautify the cemetery.
Home Depot donated some of the cleaning supplies used to give the cemetery a fresh makeover.
