MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Mosquito control workers discovered skeletal remains in the woods in Port Manatee this week. Now Manatee detectives investigate this case as a homicide.
It happened Wednesday in Port Manatee. Two Mosquito Control employees were in the woods behind Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They were checking for mosquitos when they discovered human skeletal remains.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and started a death investigation.
The Medical Examiner’s office determined after the initial autopsy that the skeletal remains belong to a White or Hispanic male, 5 foot 4 inches tall. He was in his 40s to 50s. According to the ME, the victim died of trauma to his chest area. It is unclear how long the remains were in the woods.
No further details on the cause or method of death have been released.
MCSO detectives said they will be investigating this case as a homicide. They will go through missing person reports in both Manatee and Hillsborough counties.
