SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies say a Publix employee was stabbed in a random attack. The suspect was taken into custody.
Investigators say at about 10:13 a.m. on Thursday, a man entered a Publix on Bee Ridge Road and stabbed a 57-year-old female employee in the back of the neck.
He then began stabbing himself several times before running south toward the Beneva Ridge Apartments. Deputies quickly took him into custody and also found the knife used in the stabbing. The knife was at a nearby tennis court.
The suspect was identified as Corey Scogin, 29, of Sarasota. He faces one count of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon charge.
The shocking crime has nearby residents on edge. There are a number of businesses in the area and locals say it’s a safe neighborhood.
“It really makes me scared for my kids, not only for my kids but for my neighbors ‘cuz we all walk to this Publix,” said resident Cameron Coleman.
Both the suspect and the victim were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Scogin is in stable condition, the victim has been released.
Authorities say there is no immediate threat to the public and the grocery store is open.
