NCAA investigating USF basketball for academic fraud, report says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – It’s a flagrant foul of the worst kind. ESPN reports the University of South Florida men’s basketball program is under NCAA investigation.

The association is looking into possible academic fraud. Assistant USF Coach Oliver Antigua resigned Wednesday. His brother, Head Coach Orlando Antigua, is beginning a national search for a replacement.

USF Athletics issued a statement saying its investigating and working to resolve an inquiry into potential violations of NCAA bylaws. The school said it is committed to protecting the integrity of the investigation and cannot provide any details.

The USF Bulls have struggled on the court. Last season they finished with 7 wins and 27 losses.

Now, they may also have to battle controversy.

Campus was quiet Wednesday night, as it’s summer session at USF. News Channel 8 talked with student about what a fraud investigation could mean.

“If it so happens that they actually did something bad, they actually did commit some kind of fraud, I denounce it 100 percent,” Ryan Gittens said.

Remaccson Marc said the implication of scandal hurts USF. “That just takes the school down a notch; like from being like a five-star school down to like, who knows what,” Marc said.

Students are hungry for more information. “We really need to research to see it it’s true, and if it is, we definitely need to do better and fix the problem,” Alexandrea Perkins said.
