Detectives reveal new lead in search for missing 9-year-old Fort Myers girl

A Florida Missing Child Alert has been issued for Diana Alverez.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WESH) —Detectives are again asking for help finding a missing Fort Myers girl at the center of a Florida Amber Alert. But this time, they hope a new lead in the case yields better results.

Diana B. Alvares, 9, has been missing for nearly two months, and search efforts have extended into Central Florida. Jorge Guerrero, 28, the man suspected in her disappearance who has ties to Orange County, was arrested in Lee County on child pornography charges on June 4.

According to investigators, Guerrero once lived with the girl’s family.

Guerrero’s cellphone was traced to a location in Osceola County, and crews had been searching for the girl in an area off Highway 60 near Yeehaw Junction.

At some point in late May and early June, that cellphone was traced from Fort Myers to Yeehaw Junction and then Orlando, where Guerrero had been living.

So far, efforts to find the girl have been unsuccessful. But now, the investigation has revealed that someone stopped to help Guerrero after the Chevy Malibu he was driving went off the road along State Road 60 in Osceola County sometime between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 29 — the day the girl was reported missing.

The unidentified person gave Guerrero a ride to a gas station, officials said. While that person is not part of the investigation, detectives want to interview the individual.

Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to contact detectives at (239) 477-1000.
