TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In Vietnam, Harold Carson flew radar-jamming missions to help prevent enemy missiles from hitting U.S. aircraft. Before he retired as a Lt. Colonel from the Air Force, he piloted stratotankers out of MacDill Air Force Base. The KC-135 refueling aircraft helps keep the military in the skies.
After serving and defending his country for 28 years, Carson now serves as a caregiver to Sandra, his wife of 59 years. Last October, 86-year-old Harold and 82-year-old Sandra’s plan was to get a first floor unit at the University Village retirement community.
“To get on that waiting list required a deposit of $1,500,” said Harold. He paid the money in October. By December, Sandra’s health deteriorated rapidly.
“Subsequent to that time she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and contractions since, so she’s in a wheel chair. So we elected to stay here and I requested the refund,” he added.
According to Harold the continuing care retirement community kept promising him the refund, but didn’t deliver. His day as a caregiver to his wife is consuming, he didn’t have time for distractions. Each time Harold, contacted University Village he included a deadline.
“When the last deadline was up, I said, ‘O.K., it’s time to fish or cut bait, so I contacted you’,” explained Harold.
The ownership at University Village has been involved in a prolonged and costly legal battle with the state, making getting money out of them are real challenge. 8 On Your Side reached out to John Bartle, one of the principals in the new ownership. Bartle reached out to accounting.
“I was surprised when the bell rang and I looked out and there was a Fed-Ex letter on the ground,” said Harold.
The state estimates University Village owes clients, their estates and prospective clients $4 million dollars.
“I greatly appreciate your taking this little project on, cause it is small potatoes,” Harold stated. “I thank you very much.”
