Efforts underway to change ‘Suitcase City’ area of Tampa

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) –  The area of Tampa known as ‘Suitcase City,’ near the USF campus, has for years been poverty stricken. Now things could be about to change.

The University Area Community Development Corporation (UACDC) off 22nd Street, just received a $3.8 million grant to do among other things, job training.

But it’s not just any job, they’re training for technology jobs.

“It’s going to afford our community to really enter into an IT field. We specifically will be doing TIA A-plus certification training which a 10-week course. That will train just the basics they need to enter into the field in the IT world,” Sarah Combs, Executive Director and CEO of the UACDC, said.

The classes could start late summer or early fall.
