LARGO, FL (WFLA) – Jim Smerekar just wants his car back.
It’s been 9 and a half years since he dropped off his 1934 Prostreet at Fred’s Body Works at 9380 Ulmerton Road in Largo.
He paid $11,000 for some body work and a complete paint job, but the car is still dismantled and not painted. And Smerekar just gets excuses when he stops by.
“He keeps telling me, “a couple more weeks, a couple more weeks,” Smerekar said. “But it’s been nine and a half years, and we still don’t have our car back.”
Smerekar, a car collector, with big plans for his Prostreet, said he was way too patient because he thinks Fred’s work is the best in town.
“He is a perfectionist and I’ve gone to him many times before, and when he’s done with your car, you can take it to a car show.”
But the work isn’t worth anything if it never gets done. So Smerekar called 8 On Your Side, and we paid Fred Goldman a visit. We asked Goldman why Smerekar’s job is on the back burner.
“It’s not that his is on the back burner, but I still have to pay my bills, to live and finish his job at the same time,” Goldman said.
He said he had financial trouble but promised to fix the car. He gave us one month as a deadline, so we’ll be back to follow up.
