Wes MacIntire was the sole survivor of the Skyway Bridge disaster. After being rammed by a freighter, the bridge fell into Tampa Bay. He was driving a beloved blue pickup truck from Gulfport into Manatee County in blinding rain and hurricane-force winds. The bridge swayed beneath him and he saw steel beams twist and fall into the water. He skidded off the edge and fell 140 feet. His truck bounced off the ship that struck the bridge, and his pickup sank. He escaped from the truck and was rescued by the crew of the freighter.

Wes was known as “Tough Old Bird” because of all his near-death experiences. He was in the Navy and stormed the French coastline at Normandy. He also fell off a roof once, among other mishaps.

Bill DeYoung’s book “Skyway” captures the entire riveting tale of Wes MacIntire.  The daughter of the only survivor of the Skyway disaster, Donna Yeoman, recounts her father’s terrifying experience that fateful morning.
