AVON PARK, FL (WFLA) – A woman, 20, and boy, 5, were shot Saturday evening just outside of a “Stop the Violence” event in Avon Park, police said. A suspect was arrested in connection with this shooting Sunday.

The event, where many adults and children were gathered for barbeque, basketball and other community events, turned to turmoil when shots were fired from a gathering of several men nearby. As people fled the gunfire, a woman was struck in the back, and a boy was struck in the arm. Both were taken to Florida Hospital Heartland, where the boy was later released. The woman’s condition is not currently known, as she was later transferred to another medical facility.

Jaquarius Nagee Watson, 22, of Sebring was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, firing a weapon in public, firing a weapon into a vehicle, property damage less than $200, and aggravated battery on a child. He is at the Highlands County Jail on a no bond status.

Several cars were also damaged in this shooting.

Highland County detectives are investigating. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office at 863-402-7200.
