TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Tampa Police Department announced that a GoFundMe page has been set up for the officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident while off-duty Saturday.
TPD Master Officer Howard Gimbel was riding his motorcycle with his wife, Tonya Gimbel, as a passenger when they were struck by a Cadillac SUV on Big Bend Road at the Clement Pride Boulevard intersection in Riverview. The impact forced Gimbel’s motorcycle off the road, and both he and his wife were ejected when the bike struck a road sign.
TPD Corporal Officer Greg Weekes announced Sunday that the page has been set up to help Gimbel’s family. Weeks, who started at TPD the same time as Gimbel in 1996, said that the death of his friend affected all officers who knew him.
“He was the guy you would call at 2 o’clock in the morning, and he would be there for you,” Weekes said. He added that while all of TPD is in mourning Sunday, officers are at work today doing their jobs. “We’re hurting, but we have a job to do.”
The GoFundMe page will raise funds for Sarah Gilbert, Gilbert’s daughter, a graduating senior, to help pay for her college. She has been accepted to the Univesity of South Florida.
Tonya Gilbert who was also hurt in the crash, is at a hospital in stable condition.
TPD Chief Ward said that he wanted the Gimbel family to know that they will “always be a part of the Tampa Police Department family.”
