Surveillance video released in Hillsborough robberies

Authorities don't believe the robberies are connected

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA)  Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies are hoping surveillance video from two recent robberies will lead them to the suspects. Deputies released both videos on Wednesday. They don’t believe the robberies are related.

The first happened at the Circle K convenience store at 6009 Hwy 579 in Seffner.  A man wearing a grocery bag is seen in the video entering the store around 3 a.m. on April 27. He demands money. The man then beats the clerk with an air freshener can, but she fights back, striking the robber in the head with a milk crate.

The second robbery happened at the Star Liquor Store on U.S. 301 in Riverview.  Video shows a man entering the store just minutes before closing on May 1, armed with a handgun.  He demands money and a pack of cigarettes, then forces the clerk to the floor before leaving the store.

Sgt. Troy Morgan works in the robbery unit at the sheriff’s office. He says surveillance cameras are improving by leaps and bounds, and most robberies are caught on camera.

“Businesses are finally realizing the importance of having a good camera system installed in the stores,” Morgan said. “It’s making it a lot easier for us to get the footage out to the media and out to the public so they can identify these subjects. And it happens, frequently. And it’s a huge benefit for us.”

Neither of the victims were injured, but authorities are concerned these two bandits could strike again. Anyone with any information on either robbery is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 813-247-8200. Or, call Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward.
