(WFLA)– A strong storm system knocked out power to thousands of residents and brought flooding and damage to some parts of the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday morning. Two homes were struck by lightning and the storm knocked down multiple trees, including one that fell on a car. Complete details are below.
At 8:20 a.m., Tampa Electric reported 6,947 customers were without power. Areas with the largest outages are south Hillsborough in the Sun City Center area where 1,634 customers are affected. 1,674 customers are without power in Tampa, near I-275 and Highway 41.

At 9:05 a.m., Duke Energy reported over 1,000 customers were without power. Check the Duke Energy power outage map.
Some traffic signals in the Tampa Bay area are also out.

Sarasota County: A downpour in Sarasota led to floating cars and traffic headaches
Officers with the Sarasota Police Department responded to several flooded areas throughout the City of Sarasota. Officers are asking if you do not have to be on the roads, please do not drive until the weather improves.
- Northbound Tamiami Trail at Bee Ridge Road is expected to be closed until around 2 p.m. due to flooding.
Other areas Sarasota Police Department officers are asking drivers to avoid are:
- US 301 and 6th Street
- Fruitville Road and 2nd Street
- John Ringling Causeway westbound towards St. Armands Circle
- St. Armand’s Circle Sections of Ben Franklin Drive
Pinellas County: High water flooded Park Street at 3rd Ave.N. for a short time on Wednesday morning.
Hillsborough County: A large tree fell on a car at Lithia Pinecrest Road and Lithia Springs Road. No one was injured. The road was closed in both directions but has since opened. Motorists should take alternate routes.
Pinellas County: A large downed tree is blocking the road in the 3200 block of Beaver Drive in Clearwater.
