Train-car collision kills 1 in Plant City

PLANT CITY (WFLA) – A vehicle passenger was killed after a car drove into the path of a train on Saturday in Plant City.

The crash occurred at the railroad crossing near the intersection of Candis Road and Paul Buchman Highway around 4:05 p.m.

A CSX freight train was traveling southbound parallel to Buchman Highway, approaching Candis Road, when Bruce Dean, 19, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound, and attempted to race ahead of the train.

The train struck the passenger’s side of the vehicle as it crossed the tracks, and pushed it into the ditch, which caused the car to overturn onto the driver’s side.

Dean was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries. The passenger, Angel Fidel Garcia-Vera, 20, died from his injuries.
