Dead man’s bedsores exposed bones, hadn’t been to doctor in 4 years

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (WFLA) — A New Port Richey man is accused in the abuse of his father who was found dead on the floor of an apartment with bedsores so bad they exposed his bones.

Pasco County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested James Richard Blake, 28, on charges of aggravated abuse of an adult and tampering with evidence.

Deputies responded to an apartment at 4106 Vista Verde Dr. in New Port Richey on April 16.

They say Richard Burke, 64, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease, was deceased and laying on his back on the floor in a bedroom. Deputies say Burke had bedsores on his body, including his legs, buttocks and both hips. Some of the bedsores exposed his bones.

Deputies say James Burke told them he was his father’s only caregiver and he was aware of the bedsores but did not seek medical care. He told deputies his father suffered from dementia Alzheimer’s Disease and had not been to the doctor in four years.

Burke told deputies he redressed his father and removed a mattress from the apartment and threw the clothing and mattress into a dumpster before contacting 911 because he did not want to get into trouble. Burke said his father had been bedridden for months, according to an arrest affidavit.
