TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – It’s a conundrum a lot of parents are dealing with these days. What to do when your daughter has big feet at a young age? Finding age-appropriate footwear can be an uphill battle.
Colette Glover-Hannah knows that problem first hand. “My daughter wore a size 6 at age 6.” That’s why she launched her business Hannah’s Shoebox out of her Tampa home a few years ago. “When I started the store, she was in a size 11 at age 11.”
The online store offers age-appropriate shoes for girls in lots of large sizes. Glover-Hannah describes what it used to be like to go shoe shopping with her daughter.
“It would start out like a great pleasant day and at some point, it would turn out to be a nightmare because she wanted a shoe that I was not willing to buy,” she said. “And we couldn’t find anything in her size.”
Glover-Hannah now runs Hannah’s Shoebox out of the University of Tampa’s Center for Entrepreneurship. She says the key is offering stylish shoes that girls will want to wear and keeping them affordable. The most expensive shoe Colette sells is $49.99.
“I just don’t mark them up the way other stores do. It really is simple. I don’t have a lot of overhead because we’re an online store so I’m able to reduce the cost that way.”
Glover-Hannah is now launching a school partnership program to be a uniform shoe provider.
Glover-Hannah says: “I found, as long as you have a good return policy, that’s the key. If people know they can return it and return it for free, which I allow people to do, then they’re okay with it.”
