MADERA, Cali. (WFLA) – Police in California captured dramatic video of a sinkhole forming in a residential neighborhood.

The Madera Police Department posted the eery 47-second video to their Facebook page showing the asphalt slowly collapsing and crumbling into a dark hole.

The cause of the 12-foot by 15-foot sinkhole is unknown but police say it is likely to be weather related as it has recently rained.

Part of the street fell into the sewage line. The roadway will be closed for an extended amount of time as crews work to fix the sinkhole.

The video has been seen by almost 300,000 people on the social media network.
