TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A local poodle is becoming an internet sensation. His name is SuperDog Max and one of his recent videos went viral. “Max sitting in a swing, looking like a human” has been viewed millions of times.

SuperDog Max even has his own website and Facebook page. And yes, he is real. That’s the question his owner, animal trainer Carl Gordon of Tampa, gets asked the most. Max is a 7-year-old standard red poodle from Germany.

Max isn’t only good at posing for hilarious pictures, he is also a therapy dog. One of his regular gigs is helping kids read at Our Lady of the Lourdes school in Dunedin.

“They love him. They hunt me down in the halls to know when it’s going to be their turn. They ask me when they can go again. They are so ecstatic about it,” says school Resource Director Jackie Avril.

When you have a dog in a hat pretending to read “Cat in the Hat” it captures the kids’ attention.

Avril says, “A lot of my kids that are shy and don’t like to read out loud, normally wouldn’t pick up a book on their own any way. When they come in and sit down there with Max and start reading they enjoy it.”

The beauty of a therapy dog putting the kids at ease is “He’s not going to criticize them. He’s not going to correct them or make them read louder or softer. They get to read however they want to read,” says Avril.

In case you’re wondering how in the world Gordon gets Max to sit upright like a human, there is a trick.

“There’s a special massage technique I would give the dogs from three to five times a day. It’s like when you wake up in the morning you want to stretch. Well, this technique I massage them with in the morning, his legs just want to hyper extend and go straight all the time,” says Gordon.

That makes Max one unique dog and Carl Gordon one very proud poodle papa.

Max regularly visits schools, hospitals and nursing homes spreading joy. He also appears at charity events.
