Roaches invade Hernando County school buses

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Roaches are riding buses with Hernando County students. When Nicole Baker’s two children recently got off their school bus, they told her there were cockroaches on board.

“I was shocked, absolutely shocked,” Baker said.

The mother of two shared a picture of some of the roaches, which the bus driver had allegedly taken. The driver apparently told Baker multiple Hernando County buses have roach problems.

Besides health concerns, Baker said she worries the roaches could lead to a bigger problem. “It is creating panic on the bus while the bus is rolling down the road, and to me that is huge safety concern because it can cause an accident,” she said.

Baker just wants the issue addressed now. “I’d like to see it fixed as soon as possible and I’d like to see them maintain once it is fixed because it seems as though if it was properly maintained it wouldn’t get to this point,” she Baker.

Hernando County School District officials acknowledge there is a problem with roaches on their buses.

“We are doing everything we possibly can do. As soon as it was brought to our attention, we take care of the issues. Now that we know there are several problems on the buses, we are working with our vendor to provide eradication of this issue,” school spokesman Patrick Keough said.

Keough also said he doesn’t know the source of the roach infestation. It could be children who eat food on the buses, which is against school policy, officials said.

Regardless of the cause, the buses will now be treated more than twice a year. “We are gong to bump it up to four times a year,” Keough said.

In addition, some of the seats on the buses may have to be temporarily removed to assure they can get the roaches out of the crevices.
