FRIENDSVILLE, Tenn. – Authorities in East Tennessee are investigating after two teens ended up in the hospital suffering from seizures, hallucinations and vomiting after eating candy with high levels of THC, which is active in marijuana.

A 15 and a 17-year-old girl were both brought to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Sunday, according to deputies. They said the 15-year-old is still in the ICU.

Investigators believe a 15-year-old mentally disabled boy brought two packages of “Dank Grasshopper Orange Gummies” to the Hickory Valley Baptist Church in Friendsville, Tenn.

According to the packaging, each gummy contained 450 mg of THC. He gave one package to a 15-year-old boy and one to a 24-year-old man at the church.

Police said the 15-year-old boy opened the package of gummies, but did not distribute it or eat any of the candy. They said the 24-year-old ate part of the candy, then gave the rest of it to 15 and 17-year-old girls.

Both of the girls ate the gummies and were hospitalized. The 24-year-old man was treated and released from Blount Memorial Hospital.

A Blount County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said investigators are working to determine how the candy was acquired.

Tennessee is not the only state that is seeing cases involving pot-laced candy.

Just last week, Tampa Bay area police agencies reported seeing a spike in drug-laced candy. North Port police busted three men who were carrying 300 packets of pot-laced gummies and cookies. And recently, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confiscated a large amount of drug-laced gummy worms. In most cases, these candies come from out of state.
