NEWPORT, R.I. (WFLA) – Caught on surveillance video, a car careened into a Rhode Island Pizzeria, leaving behind shattered glass and debris.

In the video, you can see the car smash through the front doors of the building. In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, you can see the driver climb out through the passenger door with just minor injuries.

“It’s tough to see it,” Reves said. “Just think of a car going through your home. It’s not easy,” said restaurant co-owner Paulina Reves. “It was awful.”

Police say he was speeding while trying to get to the Newport Naval Base. They say he lost control at a nearby turn causing him to crash into the restaurant. The owner of the pizzeria said she’s amazed that no one was seriously hurt.

“He was blessed,” Reves said. “He had his angels watching over him. Thank God he’s OK.”

The front of the pizzeria is now boarded up. The damaged is estimated at tens of thousands of dollars.

“We used to close at 1 o’clock in the morning, so at the time that this happened, customers or a hostess could’ve been standing there,” Reves said.

The driver was issued a citation for speeding and failure to maintain control of his vehicle.
