HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly, wrong-way crash that happened early Friday morning. It is the third wrong-way driving incident in the Tampa Bay area this week.

Investigators say one person was killed in the 5:50 a.m., 2-vehicle crash at Joe Ebert Road and Bloomfield Ridge Place.

A 1999 Honda driven by Dwight Bradley Thomas, 66, of Tampa, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of Joe Ebert Road and had just cleared the crest of a small hill.

A 2003 Mitsubishi driven by Christopher Lee Turner, 32, of Plant City was eastbound in his designated lane when he saw the vehicle come over the hill in his lane of travel. Turner had just enough time to apply the brakes when he was struck head-on by Thomas.

Thomas died at the scene. Turner was transported to Tampa General with serious injuries.

No information has been released regarding if alcohol is thought to be a factor in the crash.

This was the third wrong-way crash this week. Early Thursday morning, a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy prevented a potential tragedy when he arrested a woman for DUI, after seeing her drive toward him in the wrong direction on Waters Avenue. On Tuesday night, a wrong-way driver crashed into a Temple Terrace Police Department cruiser in Pasco County.

Toxicology reports found that a wrong-way driver who hit and killed Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Deputy John Kotfila Jr. on the Leroy Selmon Expressway on March 12 had a blood alcohol level of .27 at the time of the crash.
