PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) — Florida Highway Patrol closed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for six-and-a-half hours Thursday morning due to the heavy fog. Earlier this week, the Skyway Bridge closed for more than seven hours due to fog, as well.

Visibility was reduced to less than 100 feet when the bridge closed at 5 a.m. It was reopened at 11:30 a.m.

Drivers Beware: Dense fog for morning commute in Tampa Bay

Most importantly remember to drive safe: “When visibility is low, drive slow.” Also drive with your lights on low beam.

So what is causing all this “pea soup?” It is simply warm moist air from the south blowing over a relatively cool Gulf of Mexico. The air condenses, much as it does along the side of a cold glass of water. The condensation that forms is basically a cloud on the ground.

Drivers should give themselves extra time to get to their destinations. Get your morning traffic updates here and follow WFLA News Channel 8 Traffic Reporter Leslee Lacey on Twitter.
