Flu cases on the rise in Tampa Bay area

Flu season is back in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)—It’s back.

With muscle aches, body pains and runny noses, the dreaded flu is rearing its ugly head again in Florida.

According to the Florida Department of Health, flu season is now underway. In recent weeks, there has been an increase in reported outbreaks and in emergency department and urgent care center visits in children less than 18 years old and pregnant women – according to the Florida Department of Health’s website.

In the last month, one influenza outbreak was reported in a Polk County elementary school, one in a Hillsborough County childcare facility and another in a Pinellas County assisted living facility.

“There’s a lot of other things we can do to help ourselves.. get a good night’s sleep, eat well get exercise  when you’re feeling bad. you know when you have a cold or possibly the flu, stay at home.. keep flu at home,” said Steve Huard, a spokesman with the Hillsborough County Health Department.

For those wanting a more holistic solution, relief can be found in the bottom of a juice bottle.

“You see something like this pint of cold-pressed juice and it has 4 to 6 pounds of fruit and veg. Most people don’t get that in a month!” said Kelly Lessem-Bates, the owner of Squeeze Juice Works in south Tampa.

“Your brain won’t respond if it isn’t getting the right nutrients. You don’t make good choices, you get sick. You start this loop and it’s a vicious cycle,” said Lessem-Bates.

Squeeze Juice Works even has a drink called the “Flu Shot”, which contains oil of oregano, colloidal silver, apple and ginger. Squeeze Juice Works offers multiple concoctions chock full of ingredients with antioxidants meant to heal and keep folks kicking.

The Florida Department of Health urges everyone 6 months of age and older to get a flu shot.
