ARGENTINA (WFLA) – A baby La Plata dolphin was found dead on the beach in Argentina after it was passed around for selfies, CNN reported.
It happened in Santa Teresita. According to CNN, somebody took the baby dolphin out of the water and beach-goers surrounded it, taking pictures with it. After they were done, the dolphin was left on the sand, according to CNN. It is unclear why it was taken out of the water in the first place.
The World Animal News cited local wildlife authorities reporting that the dolphin dehydrated quickly and died soon after it was taken out of the water.
La Plata or Franciscana dolphins are on the Red List of the Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They are listed as vulnerable. According to MarineBio.org, they are at risk of being caught in the shark nets and fishing gear because they swim close to shore.
The Argentinian authorities released a reminder following the incident on the beach, asking people to return the dolphins to the water if they are seen on the beaches.
