SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) — A single vehicle accident at the intersection of 12th Street and US 301 in Sarasota around 3 a.m. has caused a loss power to the traffic lights and they are currently not working.

At this time, Sarasota Public Works says it will be late afternoon before the traffic lights are back on.

12th Street between Palmer Wood Court and North East Avenue is closed eastbound and westbound, however traffic is moving northbound and southbound along US 301 and 12th Street.

Officers are asking drivers to treat the intersection of 12th Street and US 301 as a four-way stop until the traffic lights begin working again.

The crash is currently under investigation but it appears the single vehicle, a Ford Focus, driven by a male, was traveling southbound on US 301 at a high rate of speed and struck the light/power pole on the northwest corner of the intersection of US 301 and 12th Street. Initial damage estimates from City of Sarasota Public Works is between $30,000 and $40,000.
