Toddler almost drowns in water drum

CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) – A 1-year-old boy nearly drowned in a drum of water in unincorporated Clearwater Saturday evening, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened at the 2500 block of Highland Acres Drive around 6 p.m. Saturday. Alexander Petroski, 56, was working in his backyard with his little son, Anthony, 1. The boy wandered off for less than a minute, and when his dad realized he couldn’t see him anymore, he went looking for him right away.

He found little Anthony face-down in the 55-gallon drum of water. He got his son out and performed CPR until a Dunedin Fire Rescue crew arrived and took over, according to PCSO.

The boy was breathing when he was taken to the Mease Countryside Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

According to PCSO, the water drum was partially buried in the ground and covered with a screen. Alexander and his wife Donna Petroski, 62, the boy’s mother, used it for a tilapia farm.

PCSO detectives continue to investigate the case but they believe it was accidental.
