Youth horse ranch finds new home in Lithia

After weeks of uncertainty, owner Angela Spillis tells News Channel 8 that Rugged Cross Youth Ranch has finally found a new home and can continue its mission of serving hundreds of foster kids in the Tampa Bay area.

LITHIA, FL (WFLA) – After their lease was suddenly not renewed last month, the future of Rugged Cross Youth Ranch, a nonprofit organization serving foster kids, was in limbo.

After weeks of uncertainty, owner Angela Spillis tells News Channel 8 that Rugged Cross Youth Ranch has finally found a new home and can continue its mission of serving hundreds of foster kids in the Tampa Bay area.

Since 2009, Rugged Cross Youth Ranch has been a haven for kids from local foster homes and orphanages to escape life’s troubles and just be kids again. At the ranch, kids are able to ride horses, learn about nature and play outside.

But in early January, Spillis was given less than three weeks to find a new home after the ranch’s lease was suddenly not renewed.

They had to be out by January 28th and since then, Rugged Cross Youth Ranch has raised more than $5,000 towards securing a new property, located at 421 Corbett Road in Lithia.

Those donations all came through a Go Fund Me Page, established to help with moving costs and lease payments.

Eventually, Spillis hopes to build a long-term foster home on the property for 12-24 kids.
