A sweet pup that became a national star after being rescued is facing a tough battle. Khalessi is the verge of kidney failure, her foster mom told News Channel 8.
Khalessi’s story of survival touched hearts in the Tampa Bay area and across the country.
She was found during the summer starving in Orlando. Her nose and upper jaw were cut off completely. Her spine, ribs, and kneecaps beaten and broken so bad that her back legs dragged behind her.
Khalessi had been used as a bait dog for fighting.
But, she was on the road to recovery thanks to the loving efforts of Stephanie Paquin from a St. Petersburg rescue group, Passion 4 Pits.
Paquin discovered Khalessi in an Orlando shelter and immediately brought her back to the Bay area. That’s when the dog’s life changed forever.
A Hudson veterinarian, Dr. Kerri Slomcenski, began treating the abused pup and brought her back to life.
On Aug. 27 Khalessi underwent massive reconstructive surgery on her face. She got a new nose and was able smell and eat again.
However, Paquin gave News Channel 8 the sad update Friday. Khalessi is at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville. WFLA.com will provide updates as we receive them.
