Thousands of starfish wash ashore on Florida beach

(WJHG) — One Port Saint Joe couple got quite a surprise during their weekend visit to the beach and they caught it all on camera.

Bud and Susan Whiten say they saw thousands of starfish lined up and down the shoreline about a mile east of the public access point at Saint Joe Bay early Sunday.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials say different environmental factors including temperature change or the recent case of red tide could have played a role in the starfish washing ashore.

FWC officials say they plan on researching the entire area after this case. However, they say it’s unlikely they’ll get definitive results as to what may have caused this particular beaching, as starfish tissue can break down fairly quickly. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
