Tampa Mayor refuses surrender; Gasparilla invasion set for Saturday

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla sent an advance team to demand the key to the city from Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn on Tuesday afternoon.

The mock invasion is part of the Gasparilla tradition that dates back to 1904.

The pirates come in, making noise, firing blanks from their cannon and guns and then enter the mayor’s office, demanding the key.

Tuesday Buckhorn refused to surrender.

“I’m not giving up the city. I’m telling you we’ll fight to the death,” shouted Buckhorn as he was surrounded by pirates.

Ye Mystic Krewe Captain Rex Farrior III then informed the mayor he and his krewe would return.

“My Krewe is armed and my ship is armored,” proclaimed Farrior.

The ceremony sets the stage for the larges parade and part of the year, set for Saturday, January 30th in Tampa.
