TAMPA, FL (WFLA) — The Tampa Police Department is investigating a crash westbound on the Courtney Campbell Causeway east of the boat ramp. The westbound lanes were closed for several hours during the morning rush hour commute.

Officials say the driver of a red Pontiac tried to pass a black Nissan but lost control and struck the car. Both cars lost control and struck nearby guardrails.

Police said one of the passengers of the Pontiac was ejected from the vehicle. After the crash, the driver of the Pontiac fled on foot westbound from the scene. The suspect was later seen on foot by a Clearwater police officer and was taken into custody.

Two passengers in the Pontiac were taken to an area hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan had minor injuries and was treated on scene.

Names of the victims have not been released. Charges are pending and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
