Officer catches large python; challenge still open

A Florida Fish and Wildlife officer found a 16’10” python Monday. The officer was patrolling during the first weekend of the Python Removal Competition.

The officer isn’t eligible to win prizes but did receive bragging rights, FWC said.

The large Burmese python was sunning itself on a levy when the officer found it in the Rocky Glades Small Game Area. The python was “humanely euthanized.” Scientists will collect valuable data from the snake, FWC officials said.
