30 days, 30 miles: A Challenge for the Gasparilla Distance Classic

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) — Are you up for the challenge? With the Gasparilla Distance Classic races just a month away, race coordinators are challenging you to run or walk 30 miles in 30 days.

By the time the starting gun sounds on race day, many of the runners and walkers have already logged miles of pounding the pavement to get ready. Now, we get to celebrate those miles too.

Once you download the free Map My Run app on a smartphone, the site has a list of challenges. You choose the Gasparilla Distance Classic Challenge, and you are ready to run those 30 miles in 30 days.

Gasparilla 2016 Schedule of Events

Not only does the app track your miles, but you are a part of the community of runners who are also participating in the challenge and the races. Whether you run or walk one mile a day or several at time, the challenge is meant to make the training as social and interactive as the race itself.

“Our hope is we get everybody excited about Gasparilla and that it’s coming up, and they’ll start posting on that platform, so we can watch what’s going on,” said Susan Harmeling, Executive Director of the Gasparilla Distance Classic. “They can watch each other and maybe have challenges within their family,” she continued.

As an added incentive to run those miles, everyone who participates in the challenge is eligible to win one of five $100 Under Armour gift cards.

The Gasparilla Distance Classic offers several races of difference lengths during the weekend of February 20th. On  Saturday, the 15K and 5K races will run down Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa. The following day, it’s the half marathon and 8K races.
