Duette tornado kills 2, injures children

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – Two people were killed and four children and another adult were injured after powerful tornadoes ripped through Manatee and Sarasota counties early Sunday morning.

The tornado hit Duette at about 4 a.m. According to the National Weather Service, it was an EF2 tornado with the path length of seven miles. According to the weather officials, residents only had an 18-minute warning to take cover before the tornado hit.

One home in Duette was destroyed, all the victims were the members of the family who lived there, according to the county officials. Stephen B. Wilson, 58, the grandfather died at the scene, the grandmother Kade Wilson, 51, passed away on the way to the hospital. She survived the hit but suffered a heart attack being transported. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The children, two boys and two girls between 6 and 10 years old, were taken to the hospital. Their father Stephen M. Wilson, 38, who pulled them out of the house and sheltered them in a nearby barn, was injured as well. According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, two girls are in serious condition, the boys are stable. Stephen M. Wilson is in stable condition as well.

Three children are siblings, and the fourth is their cousin.

Manatee County Sheriff W. Brad Steube said he was amazed anybody got out alive after the hit.
