Red Cross offers free Home Fire Escape Plan

(WFLA)– An alarming statistic may prompt you to make sure your home has working smoke detectors and create a Home Fire Escape plan.

60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms, according to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross suggests you install smoke detectors on every level of your home and also install them in bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

You should also test smoke alarms once a month to make sure they’re working and change the batteries if they are not.

The Red Cross also recommends you create a fire escape plan and discuss the plan with your family, so they know what to do. Household members should also practice the plan twice a year.

The Red Cross has a free worksheet to help you and your family create a Home Fire Escape Plan. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
