Game of Homes

For homeless cats in Tampa Bay, the new year started off with a bang when the Humane Society of Tampa Bay was awarded $25,000 from Best Friends Animal Society to support cat adoptions. The Society was chosen from a large applicant pool because of their innovative programs for cats and their success with finding them homes. The funding will be used to offset the cost and care of adult cats (over 4 months old) allowing the Society to decrease their adoption fees by 80%, from $25 in 2015 to just $5 for the entirety of 2016.

The year-long, $5 adult cat adoptions promotion, marketed as “Game of Homes” after HBO’s popular series “Game of Thrones”, will reduce the length of stay for cats at the shelter allowing the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to take in more from both the public and Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center. In turn, they hope that come 2017 there will be more cats in more homes throughout the community.

“The goal of this campaign is very simple, to save more lives,” said the Society’s CEO Sherry Silk. “We aim to increase the number of cats we take in this year by at least 100. Thanks to our partners at Best Friends Animal Society, we feel confident the goal will be realized.”

Cats (and all pets) adopted from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, health-checked, and come with 30 days of free pet health insurance. The Society practices open, same-day adoptions and welcomes prospective pet parents to bring their families to the shelter to be involved with the adoption process. Adoption hours are Monday-Friday from 12:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturday/Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Pets available for adoption can be viewed on the website at
