Florida teen wins $2 million Powerball first time playing the lotto

SANFORD, Fla. (WFLA) — A 19-year-old Sanford, Florida man is the lucky winner of the only $2 million Powerball prize from Wednesday night’s drawing. The amazing part: It was his first time ever playing the lottery.

Florida Lottery says Frederick Walker, 19, claimed a $2 million prize on Thursday, one day after the drawing for the record-setting $1.6 billion jackpot.

Walker’s winning ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers, but did not match the Powerball. Walker added Power Play to his ticket for $1, which multiplied his prize from $1 million to $2 million.

Wondering if you won any money? Here’s how to check your tickets.

According to Walker, he had never purchased a lottery ticket before.

“When I heard about the billion dollar Powerball jackpot, I decided to try my luck and buy a ticket,” said Walker. “I got to the store, and there was already a completed play slip at the playstation.”

Not being familiar with lottery games, Walker figured those numbers were as good as any so he took that play slip up to the counter and purchased his ticket.

“How lucky that the first time I played, I won!”

Walker purchased the winning ticket at Sav-A-Ton, located at 199 North Country Club Road in Lake Mary.

Florida Lottery officials are still waiting for the winner of the jackpot to come forward. The winning ticket was purchased at Publix, located at 3830 Highway A1A in Melbourne Beach.

The retailer will receive $100,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket. The Florida winner’s share of the jackpot comes to $528.6 million, the lotto says.

Two other winning jackpot tickets were sold; one in Chino Hills, California, another in Tennessee.

Two $1 million tickets were sold in Tampa Bay. One was sold at Publix, located at 7880 113th Street in Seminole, and another at Radiant Food Store, located on Gall Blvd. in Zephyrhills.

The winning numbers are: 4 – 8 – 19 – 27 – 34 and Powerball 10.
