CORAL SPRINGS, Fla.(CNN) – A six-year-old has been safely reunited with her family after a man stole a car with the little girl inside.

The terrifying situation happened at a Sunoco Gas Station located at 7801 Sample Road. Surveillance video captured part of her frightening experience. A man walked up to a parked Kia, circled around it before jumping inside the driver’s seat and driving off.

The owner of the car frantically chased the car because he knew his step-daughter was inside the car.

The thief quickly realized the child was in the back seat of the car. According to police, the thief lets the girl out on the side of the road about 2 miles away from the gas station. “The child actually did advise us that the suspect did stop his vehicle, and actually instructed the child to get out of the car,” a Coral Springs Police Department spokesman said.

The girl was discovered running the side of a street, crying, by a jogger who called 911. “This was only five to eight minutes when the child was located but it’s just got to be a terrifying time, it seemed like an eternity,” McKeone said.

“As a parent you’re supposed to protect your child, and I couldn’t do anything and I just pray that he didn’t touch my child. That’s what was going through my head, that I was just praying that he didn’t touch her,” the child’s mother told WSVN-TV.

Police are searching for a 2012 black Kia Optima with the license tag CQQV13. If you have any information on this carjacking, call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
