Temple Terrace police warn of fake cops in area

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (WFLA) — Temple Terrace police are warning residents about people who have been impersonating police officers. On two occasions over the past month there have been two reports of impersonators knocking on doors.

The first case happened on Dec. 17

“They told her that she had been a victim of identity theft and that they were investigating it.  They asked to see the homeowners computer, she allowed them in to the home  and let them look at her computer. They took some information down and then left and said that they would be in touch,” said City of Temple Terrace spokesman Michael Dunn.

Another impersonator knocked on a door Saturday, Jan. 2 but “the person opening the door said he’s not here and then closed the door,” according to Dunn.

“They’ve shown up with uniforms, and asking a lot of personal question,” Dunn about the impersonators who have not been violent and have not taken anything beyond some possible personal information.

“We are really baffled as to what the motive for this really was.  We don’t know what the impersonators were after or what their true intent was.”

Dunn is advising people to be wary about who they are opening the door for.

“Anybody can buy a badge; you need to ask to see the credentials because the police officers do have credentials that identify them as an officer for the Temple Terrace Police department.  It’s similar to a driver’s license but it has Temple Terrace police department on it, it has a badge, it has a picture,” said Dunn who would not show us the Temple Terrace credentials in fear that they too could be duplicated.

In most cases, Dunn tells News Channel 8 officers will not show up unannounced.

“They’ll contact you in advance and say we are looking into this we would like to talk to you.

Yes they’ll call you,” said Dunn who also advises if you have concerns to double check by calling the department before letting an officer in.

Police released the following suspect descriptions for the first incident-
