Traffic alert for the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) — As Tennessee and Northwestern fans make their way to Raymond James Stadium for the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day, the Florida Department of Transportation alerts drivers that traffic could be bad on Friday.

On New Year’s Day and days surrounding the game, drivers should expect increased congestion when traveling on parts of I-4, I-75, I-275, and the Veterans Expressway. Friday’s traffic will be jammed around Raymond James Stadium, as well, with road closures getting underway early in the morning.

Try to avoid using Dale Mabry Highway as it becomes severely jammed up. Howard and Armenia Avenues are better alternates to and from the stadium.

Parking in the residential areas east of Raymond James Stadium can prove helpful to saving time when exiting after the game.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Leave ample time to reach your destination, especially when traveling near areas expecting increased congestion due to the Outback Bowl.
  • Visit FL511.com for interactive roadway maps showing traffic congestion and crashes, travel times and traffic camera views.
  • Call 511 toll free for updates in English and Spanish.
