PINELLAS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – A scooter rider was critically injured when a semi tractor trailer hit him on Gandy Boulevard Friday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
It happened after 9 p.m. near Gandy Boulevard and San Marten Boulevard. The scooter with a broken tail light was going east on Gandy on the outside lane. A semi tractor trailer hauling gasoline was also going east in the outside lane.
The semi driver James Alexander Dixon, 48, of Tampa, couldn’t see the scooter and rear-ended it. The scooter rider, a 55-year-old man from St Petersburg, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. FHP officials will release his name after notifying his family.
He was not wearing a helmet, according to FHP. The driver of the semi was not injured.
According to FHP, alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
