PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A fisherman made a disturbing discovery near the Weedon Island Preserve on Thursday, a dead pit bull that had a rope around its neck and a cinder block tied to the rope.
Detectives with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the female dog’s death.
Deputies say that Phillip Valerani found the deceased dog floating in the waterway near a channel leading into the Bartow Power Plant, just off the Weedon Island Preserve.
“At first we were like, oh is it a log, or is it a boar.” Said Valerani from the front yard of his Plant City home. “I mean the size of it and the next thing you know it was a dog. ”
When deputies arrived, they determined that someone had tied a short rope around the dog’s neck and attached a cinder block to the rope leaving the dog in the water.
Deputies described the dog as a brindle or brown colored female pit bull with a white colored belly.
Valerani wonders who would do such a thing, and why? “Regardless of what the circumstances may have been, if it was sick and you didn’t have the money, I know these days it could cost hundreds of dollars to put a dog down.” Said Valerani.
The dog’s remains were recovered from the waterway and the remains were released to SPCA of Tampa Bay. Investigators say a preliminary necropsy report indicates the dog may have been deceased before it was tossed into the water.
