ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – Police say a pair of suspected ‘porch pirates’ had their 6-month-old baby in the car when they stole packages from a St. Pete porch, and that’s not even the worst part.
Once an officer arrived in the neighborhood, police claim Derick Corbett and Cassandra Cole sped off. They only made it a few blocks before running a red light and causing a crash. Then, the couple took their son and hid in the bushes until police closed in.
“The father actually put the baby up as a shield in front of himself, because he thought someone was going to shoot. But that, of course, wasn’t going to happen,” said Yolanda Fernandez, St. Petersburg Police Spokeswoman.
The child, Javion Corbett, has a cut on his forehead and is expected to recover.
Corbett and Cole face a number of charges including burglary and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. Cole is also facing a child abuse charge. They are scheduled to appear in a Pinellas County courtroom Thursday.
Law enforcement throughout Tampa Bay are dealing with porch pirates. Home security cameras captured images of a thief in Apollo Beach stealing a present while the family was home eating dinner. Police believe the burglar followed delivery trucks.
In Polk County, a porch pirate got caught on camera stealing presents. The woman accused, Dana Hager, is the wife of a police officer.
