TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — If you missed them the first time around, singer Patti LaBelle’s “Sweet Potato Pies” are making a return to Walmart store shelves. But, you better act fast, they sell out quickly.
The Walmart on Gandy Boulevard in Tampa received a shipment of 65 pies. Workers put them out in the bakery department on Wednesday morning. Customers saw the pies being placed onto shelves and stood in line, waiting to buy a pie for $3.48.
Customers were only allowed to buy two of the $3.48 pies. All pies were gone in 10 minutes. Many customers went away empty handed.
Patti LaBelle has been called the “Godmother of Soul”. Her hit songs include “Lady Marmalade” and “On My Own”. LaBelle sells the pies and a line of sauces under the “Patti’s Good Life” label.
Demand for the pies shifted into high gear around Thanksgiving when James Wright Chanel’s YouTube review (see below) of #PattisPie went viral. As of Wednesday, Dec. 9, the video has been viewed more than 4.1 million times.
Walmart said that during peak demand, stores sold one pie a second for 72 hours straight. At the end of November, the pies were the most requested item across all Walmart Wish Lists.
“Everyone came in and bought every pie I had,” Walmart store manager Aaron Powell said. “At that point I had 300 pies and they all went in one day.”
“It’s like having the hottest TV available for Christmas,” Powell said.
LaBelle recently visited a Walmart Supercenter to celebrate her next batch of pies. The store associates gave her a “gold pie” in honor of her edible hit and to accompany her many gold records.
Walmart said that stores should receive more pie shipments during the next few weeks. The stores will post updates on their local Facebook pages.
It took 2 million pounds of California-grown sweet potatoes to pull off this Christmas miracle.
St. Petersburg resident George Brown thought he would give it a shot so he drove to the Walmart on Gandy Boulevard in Tampa Wednesday to see if he could get two of the popular pies.
“My wife saw it on the TV this morning, and I promised her I’d come and stand in line for them,” he says.
He got his two pies.
