TAMPA FL (WFLA) – Aletta Keplinger Rodriguez came to Joe Chillura park on Wednesday carrying presents for children.
“Children need toys and you have to do the right thing, especially at this time of year,” said Keplinger Rodriguez.
She brought the toys for the Marine Corps’s Toys for Tot’s campaign. “I think the Marines are wonderful in anything that they do, especially this and it’s so touching that they reach out to the youth,” said Keplinger Rodriguez.
Friday, the Marines will be at WFLA TV taking part in Kindness Day. “It’s a one-stop shop for a bunch of really good charitable organizations and it allows people to donate on multiple fronts and to help a lot of good charities out,” said Gunnery Sergeant David Barrett.
Barrett is helping coordinate the Toys for Tots program in Tampa. “We’re well ahead of where we were last year at this time. Toy collections are going really good and it seems like a lot of the people in the community are aware of the donations being made,” said Barrett.
The Marines are in need of toys for boys from infant to age 3 and they need toys for girls and boys from ages 9 to 12.
“I remember the enjoyment of me opening my presents on Christmas and now I have five children of my own, so to think there would ever be a kid that couldn’t have that same experience it would be sad,” said Barrett.
