WATCH: Dog stays by owner’s side after Maryland fire

Still frame from NBC News video

MARYLAND – Dogged determination kept man’s best friend by an owner’s side. However, it also kept rescue crews away.

This persistent pup protected the owner, standing guard after an overnight house fire in Maryland, outside Washington, D.C.

The problem is the dog, while not aggressive, deterred crews who needed to get the apparently unconscious man out of the home in order to treat him.

Firefighters finally discharged a dry powder extinguisher in the dog’s direction, giving them enough time to get to the man.

The dog’s owner is expected to be okay.
