ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) – Morena Thurston woke up with to a frightening on Saturday morning.
“My brother in law, banging on the door saying your wood is on fire,” said Thurston.
Outside, under the cover of darkness, a hooded man had poured a can of fluid on a stack of firewood and set it on fire.
Thurston says her husband sells the firewood as a form of additional income for the family.
Police later found a video of the incident recorded by a security camera outside of the home. “I thought the car was going to explode because the fire was so huge and it ruined my mom’s car,” said Thurston.
St. Petersburg police say the video doesn’t show the fire starters face, but it does give a number of other clues. “In this case, while you can’t see his face, you see their car you see the way he walks, the way he moves, you know he’s right handed. So many things that we can glean from the video to help us in our investigations,” said Yolanda Fernandez with the St. Petersburg police department.
Fernandez says the fire grew quickly out of control.
“There is a huge risk there, it was very dangerous. The whole place could have caught on fire, the firewood, the cars as well as the home,” said Fernandez.
Thurston hopes the video will help police catch the person who set the fire. “I hope to god they put them behind bars,’ said Thurston.
