TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Newly released surveillance video gives Shelby Torres hope. Two weeks ago, a driver hit and killed her 11-year old son Alex on Hillsborough Avenue, just east of the Hillsborough River.
The video is grainy and shows a car driving by the Meals on Wheels building just to the west of the Hillsborough River bridge. Police are not saying that was the car that hit Torres, but investigators believe the driver may have some information that may help in the investigation.
The accident happened right around 2:20 a.m. on Nov. 7. Alex had gotten into trouble at his school in Town N’ Country that day and was supposed to ride his bike home. He never showed up. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputies launched a massive search for him but turned up nothing.
Shelby Torres recalls the last conversation she had with her son over the phone. He was in trouble because homework hadn’t been turned in.
“And I told him that he wasn’t going get off punishment and he told me, his last words to me were yes, ma’am, I understand. And then he didn’t come home,” Shelby Torres said, wiping tears away. “That was my last conversation with him. ”
Investigators believe a mid-2000s Nissan Altima, gun metal grey in color hit Alex. They have not been able to locate the car, nor the driver.
Torres knows the hit and run driver is to blame for her son’s death, but regrets her last phone call with Alex.
“There are so many … I can’t sleep at night because of the regret,” Torres said. “I just wish I would have said I loved you before he handed the phone back to the teacher. I wish I would’ve said I loved you. I love you.”
